Over the past several months, there has been a great deal of discussion in the media, on social media, and even in political campaigns suggesting about the insurance industry. As someone who works with policyholders every day, I'd like to offer some perspective.

Insurance policies are legal contracts. They are designed to provide protection for covered losses that are sudden and accidental in nature. They are not warranties that cover every issue that can occur with a home. Many problems homeowners experience are the result of normal wear and tear, aging, deferred maintenance, or other conditions that fall outside the coverage provided by an insurance policy.

Sometimes damage is simply not covered under the terms of the policy. Other times, the damage may be less than the policy's deductible, or only part of the damage is covered. While these situations can understandably be frustrating, they do not mean the insurance company failed to honor its contract.

Insurance companies have a responsibility to pay what is owed under the policy—and just as importantly, not to pay for losses that are not covered. If insurers routinely paid claims outside the terms of the contract, the cost would ultimately be borne by all policyholders.

At my agency, we recently reviewed hail claims involving roof damage. We found that over the past three years, approximately 81% of the reported roof hail claims resulted in total roof replacements. The remaining claims involved partial damage, damage that did not exceed the deductible, or conditions that were not covered under the policy.

I cannot speak to every individual claim or every experience someone may have had. Every claim has its own facts and circumstances and deserves to be evaluated on its own merits. However, I can say that our policyholders consistently tell us they've been treated fairly, and their experience is what guides how we do business.

Our agency has one goal: to help our customers understand their coverage before a loss occurs and to advocate for them when a covered loss does occur. This led me to return to agency ownership in 2001, setting up my current office right here in Oklahoma City. Having grown up in the Oklahoma City area, I truly feel fortunate to serve the community I call home and do what I love every day.
